The Russia- Ukraine war is escalating day by day , with both the nations using long – range missiles to target one another. The US under Joe Biden has been encouraging Ukraine to fight against Russia by supplying it with long range missiles . Putin on the other hand is also quite determined to win the war by occupying as much Ukrainian territory as possible. With big players like the United states and the European union involved in the conflict, the chances of a major geopolitical conflict seem like a possibility. The war between Russia and Ukraine has now been going on since 1000 days, with both sides choosing not to compromise. A reason to worry can be Putin’s decision to amend Russia’s nuclear policy which advocated the use of nuclear weapons only in case of a nuclear attack on its soil , which now is amended . This means nuclear weapons can be used by Russia also in case of a conventional attack on its soil . We all know the kind of destruction nuclear weapons can cause to nation- states , as was evident during world war 2 . With Putin’s expansionist policies , US and the EU supporting Ukraine and with the threat of nuclear weapons being used , the chances of ending the conflict soon seem too good to be true . The biggest setback has been the failure to reach a consensus by the nation states in the International arena, especially in the last G20 meeting held in Brazil , where nobody addressed the ongoing war and the possible solution of a ceasefire.
While countries like India have always advocated for a no war policy under Narendra Modi’s regime, but powerful countries like USA and the European Union have blatantly expressed their support for Ukraine by providing military aid . A war like situation is quite a possibility if mechanisms are not put in place to put an end to the ongoing conflict
Will Donald Trump’s presidency make a difference?
Donald Trump has always been vocal about his no war policy . He talked about putting an end to the Russia- Ukraine war as soon as he takes the role of the president of USA , however only time will tell how successful he can be in achieving his objectives. Trump has often been criticised for supporting world leaders like Putin and Kim Kong Ju , but this time it’s important he plays the role of a mediator instead of escalating the conflict any further. Talks have been going on with Trump , Musk and Zelensky , however there has been no conclusion to it as of now . But looking at how things are going right now , it’s going to be a tough task for him to put an end to this war looking at how far it’s been escalating, It’s certainly going to be a test to his presidency and his capability to deliver as a world leader in times of crisis. It remains to be seen if his talks with Zelensky can prove to effective in handling the conflict. Till then it’s a precarious situation as far geopolitics is concerned, the threat of a nuclear war may seem likely or maybe inevitable in the future.
