Shubman Gill has been in excellent form for India, particularly in one-day internationals alongside his opening partner and Indian skipper Rohit Sharma.
Prior to the Indian Premier League in 2023, he smashed his first ODI double century and his maiden T20I century, both against New Zealand. With 890 runs, he finished IPL 2023 as the highest run-scorer.
Many consider Shubman to be the next great thing in international cricket, and he will have to play a major part at the top of the order for India as they attempt to win prestigious events such as the Asia Cup and the subsequent ODI World Cup in the near future.
When the openers do well, the Indian team is always more fearsome. Shubman has forged an exciting opening pair with captain Rohit Sharma, and they will try to get his team off to a solid start so that the batsmen can follow in the forthcoming big-ticket competitions.
Shubman and Rohit have started the batting in nine matches, scoring 685 runs at an average of 76.11.
The Punjab batsman recently explained how his batting style differs from Rohit’s and how the two complement each other well. Shubman believes that his partnership with the veteran will benefit the two-time ODI World Cup champions in the future.
Gill on opening partnership with Rohit
“I think because his (Rohit’s) targeted areas are a bit different (to mine). He loves to go aerial in the Powerplay, and I’m someone who likes to find the gaps and keep getting those boundaries, and he’s someone who likes to hit sixes. So I think that combination works well. It feels great to be able to open with him, especially knowing that all the focus is on him,”
Shubman was quoted as saying by the International Cricket Council.
“He’s someone who likes the other batters to go and just express himself and play the way I want to play the game. So in that nature, he gives the players full freedom for how they want to express their game.”
The Indian squad is currently in Ireland for a three-match Twenty20 International series. However, the majority of the reserve players were sent on that tour. The Asia Cup, which begins on August 30, will include players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
On September 2, Rohit’s side will kick off their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan at Pallekele. The opening combination of Rohit and Shubman will face an uphill battle against the electric speed troika of Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf. Fans are anticipating the mouth-watering clash in the six-team event with bated breath.
