Reece James is allegedly on the verge of signing a long-term contract extension with Chelsea. The 22-year-contract old’s at Stamford Bridge still has three years remaining, but the defender has supposedly been seeking a wage increase to reflect his significance to the team.
In recent months, there has also been conjecture over his future, with Real Madrid and Manchester City reportedly having an interest in the England international.
James stated earlier this summer that he wanted to sign a new long-term contract with the Blues. His current contract is thought to pay him £80,000 per week.
Reece James comments on extending his stay with Chelsea
“I’d like to think so (remain at the club). I grew up as a Chelsea fan and I made my name playing for Chelsea the club I’ve always supported. I don’t see why that would change, I play for Chelsea now and I’m enjoying it,”
James told BBC Sport.
During the 2021–22 season, James once again played a pivotal role for Chelsea, making 39 appearances across all leagues and providing six goals and 10 assists.
The defender has already made four appearances this season and has already contributed one goal and one assist, helping the Blues finish third in the Premier League table, as well as making it to the FA Cup and EFL Cup finals.
According to The Times, James and Chelsea are in advanced contract negotiations, and a decision may be made at the start of the following week.
The Englishman was unwell on Tuesday night, missing the Premier League match against Southampton, but he will play against West Ham United on Saturday.
“It’s an exciting time. Not much changes from the players or the management point of view. Our aim is still the same to win every competition we’re in and win every game,”
James said when discussing his team’s ambitions for the 2022-23 campaign.
Chelsea will play West Ham on Saturday before travelling to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night for their Champions League debut. Chelsea has dropped two of their previous three Premier League games against Leeds United and Southampton.
