Tottenham Hotspur are expected to make a decision on Antonio Conte’s future within the next 48 hours, according to reports. Spurs’ manager’s future has been under the spotlight after dropping points against relegation-threatened Southampton on Saturday.
Conte launched an astounding attack on the Tottenham squad in his post-match press conference. The London club’s manager stated that he witnessed “selfish players” on the pitch.
“I think it’s better to go into the problem, we are not a team,”
Conte said:
“We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart [into it]. This season compared to last, now we are worse in this aspect. When you are not a team you cannot improve.”
Conte went on to add:
“They don’t play for something important, yeah. They don’t want to play under pressure, they don’t want to play under stress. It is easy in this way. Tottenham’s story is this, 20 years there is the owner and they never won something but why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stay here.”
“I have seen the managers that Tottenham had on the bench. You risk to disrupt the figure of the manager and to protect the other situation in every moment. Until now I try to hide the situation but now, no, because I repeat I don’t want to see what I have seen today.”
“Everyone has to take responsibility. Not only the club, the manager and the staff. The players have to be involved in this situation because it is time to change this situation if Tottenham want to change. They can change the manager, a lot of managers, but the situation cannot change. Believe me.”
Conte has informed Tottenham’s hierarchy that his comments were meant at his players, not the club’s board. Following Conte’s heated news conference, some Spurs players have stated that the 53-year-old should be removed of his duties.
Tottenham Hotspur could replace Antonio Conte sooner than later?
According to Sky Sports News, the club will make a decision on the Italian’s future within the next 48 hours. It is expected that the former Inter Milan manager would struggle to see out the remainder of his contract.
The Italian manager will be running out of his contract this summer. According to the sources, Tottenham are set to fire Conte by the end of the week.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is said to have utilised the last few days to make a decision on Conte’s future, and he will make a final decision soon.
If Conte is fired, former Tottenham player and current first-team coach Ryan Mason might take over as interim manager until the end of the season.
Spurs might also try to persuade an out-of-work manager like Luis Enrique, Mauricio Pochettino, or Thomas Tuchel to take over immediately.
Tottenham Hotspur are fourth in the Premier League rankings, but they are only two points ahead of Newcastle United, who have two games in hand.
