IPL 2022: DC took a blow in the hunt for Top 4 after defeat against CSK

IPL 2022 CSK beats DC by 97 runs

On May 8, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) thrashed the Delhi Capitals (DC) by 91 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai in IPL 2022 Match 55. As a result, the reigning champions have not only won their fourth game of the season, but have also significantly harmed Delhi’s playoff aspirations.

Delhi Capitals’ skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and chose to bowl first.

For CSK, Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad put on a 110-run opening stand before the latter was removed for 41. Conway, on the other hand, continued to anchor the innings, scoring his third half-century in a row. The New Zealand attacking batsman was eventually sent back after scoring 87 runs in 49 balls. Finally, MS Dhoni’s unbeaten eight-ball 21 propelled CSK to a massive 208/6.

Anrich Nortje took three wickets but allowed 42 runs to be scored, while Khaleel Ahmed took two wickets for 28 runs.

In response, when opener Srikar Bharat was removed in the second over, Delhi’s innings began to fall apart. David Warner (19) and Mitchell Marsh (25) of Australia both had starts but failed to convert them into valuable runs.

Captain Rishabh Pant made another cameo appearance, this time scoring 21 runs off 11 balls before being dismissed by Moeen Ali. The batters that came after were disappointing, and while all-rounder Shardul Thakur’s crucial 24 helped Delhi move past 100. It was not enough, as they were eventually swept out for 117 in the 18th over.

Simarjeet Singh, Dwayne Bravo, and Mukesh Choudhary each picked two while Ali took 3 wickets and gave away only 13 runs. Thus, with this now the defending champions registered their 4th victory of the season but are already out from the race for Top 4.

While DC took a blow in their playoffs qualification as they now stand at 5th spot with 10 points in 11 games. SRH and PBKS have equal telly in the points table as DC but RCH, who sits at 4th spot are leading with 4 points but have played a game more.

IPL 2022: CSK defeated DC by 97 runs – Post Match Reaction

After the match the winning captain MS Dhoni said

“It really helps. It would have been better if we would have had a win like this somewhere early. It was a perfect game.”

“Thinking of the NRR doesn’t help. You just want to enjoy the IPL. When two other teams are playing, you don’t want to be under pressure and thinking. You just have to think about what to do in the next game. If we make the playoffs, great. But even if we don’t it’s not the end of the world.”

Meanwhile, losing captain Rishabh Pant said

“I think they outplayed us in all departments. As Delhi Capitals we have played a lot of close games, there had to be a game where there is a massive difference between the two sides and unfortunately we are on the receiving end.”

What’s next for Delhi and Chennai?

DC will take on Rajasthan Royals in their next game on 11th May, Wednesday at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. While CSK will lock hons with the table bottomer’s Mumbai Indians the next day i.e Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium.
