Jurgen Klopp plays down Liverpool’s chances of signing Kylian Mbappe

Jurgen Klopp on Kylian Mbappe

Jurgen Klopp has confessed that he ‘chuckles’ when he reads rumours that Liverpool are attempting to sign PSG star Kylian Mbappe.

Liverpool have already made a statement in the transfer market this summer, landing Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

While the Merseyside club is believed to be looking for at least one defender and another midfielder, a striker might also be on the cards for the right price.

This position comes as Mbappe is extensively connected with a number of teams as a result of his desire to leave PSG at the end of his contract next year.

PSG’s response is that they want to sell the France international before the end of August or, at the very least, negotiate a loan agreement that works for everyone.

This has apparently brought Liverpool into the picture, as Mbappe is a fan of the club and may be more receptive to a move to Anfield than other Premier League clubs.

However, Klopp has downplayed recent speculation, claiming that Liverpool will only sign the 2018 World Cup winner if club officials are secretly negotiating a deal.

Klopp on Kylian Mbappe

Klopp told Sky Sport Deutschland:

“We laugh about it. I can say that I think he’s a really good player, but the financial conditions don’t suit us at all. I wouldn’t like to ruin the story now, but as far as I know, there’s nothing to it.”

“But it’s possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me, but that hasn’t happened in the eight years that I’ve been here. That would be the first time.”

PSG believe Mbappe has already agreed to join Real Madrid as a free agent in 2024, despite the fact that Los Blancos are currently unable to pay a high price for the 24-year-old.

Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League were willing to pay a world record £259 million to get Mbappe, but the dynamic attacker refused to negotiate a move to Saudi Arabia.

Chelsea, who are now headed by former PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino, have also reportedly been encouraged to enter the fight for Mbappe.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi only wants players who are committed to the Ligue 1 winners, thus Mbappe is not being considered for selection.
