Manchester City agrees £55.5m deal for Jeremy Doku

Jeremy Doku to Manchester City

Manchester City have allegedly signed a £55.5 million agreement for Rennes winger Jeremy Doku, putting the Citizens ahead of their Premier League rivals in the hunt for the player’s signature.

Last season, the 21-year-old had his most productive season in front of goal, scoring six goals and contributing two assists as Bruno Genesio’s side finished fourth in France’s top flight.

Doku made his name with Belgian club Anderlecht before joining Rennes in October 2020, and he has since established himself as a regular for the Red and Blacks.

The attacking player also has an impressive international track record, having played 14 times for Belgium since making his debut in August 2020.

According to Sky Sports News, Manchester City and Rennes have agreed on a deal for the purchase of Doku, with the winger expected to head to the Premier League.

As per source, the Citizens would pay £55.5 million for the attacker, who is set to become Man City’s third signing of the summer window.

Mateo Kovacic was brought in from Premier League rivals Chelsea to improve Pep Guardiola’s engine room, while Josko Gvardiol was brought in from RB Leipzig to give the English champions more defensive alternatives.

The treble winners have lost a number of first-team players this summer, with Man City wanting to sign Doku as a replacement for Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian left Manchester after five years to join Saudi Pro League team Al Ahli, where he will play alongside Edouard Mendy and Allan Saint-Maximin.

Despite the excellent performances of teenager Cole Palmer, the Premier League winners are believed to be trying to strengthen their winger options before the transfer market closes on September 1.

Palmer made the net ripple during both the Community Shield match against Arsenal and the UEFA Super Cup final against Sevilla, but the forward has only played 10 minutes of Premier League action all season.

Last week, it was claimed that Chelsea were about to join Manchester City in their pursuit of Doku after failing to recruit Crystal Palace playmaker Michael Olise.

The Blues are thought to have invoked the £35 million release clause in Olise’s Selhurst Park contract, but the France youth international afterwards signed a new four-year agreement with the Eagles.

Depending on how quickly a deal for Doku is completed, Man City may be able to give the 21-year-old his debut when they go to Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon.
