Manchester United on the verge of signing Sergio Reguilon

Sergio Reguilon to Manchester United

Manchester United are allegedly close to signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon.

The Red Devils went on the lookout for a replacement left-back after learning that Luke Shaw would be out for a while with a muscle ailment.

Left-back backup Tyrell Malacia is also out with a muscular problem, and Brandon Williams was granted a loan move to Ipswich Town last week.

Diogo Dalot played in that position against Nottingham Forest on Saturday and will continue to be a possibility for head coach Erik ten Hag, despite Aaron Wan-Bissaka appearing to have clinched the right-back position.

However, the 20-time winners have been looking for a specialist in that position, with Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella thought to be the favored candidate.

Cucurella did, however, play the entire 90 minutes of Chelsea’s EFL Cup match against AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday evening, which is likely to have hampered his prospects of moving on.

Marcos Alonso of Barcelona was also thought to be a target before it was revealed that the Spain international will remain at Camp Nou, having already been registered to play in La Liga.

Reguilon’s name was also mentioned among the targets, and according to The Athletic, the Tottenham defender is reportedly on the verge of joining United.

According to the report, the 26-year-old has been granted permission to fly to Manchester for a medical before joining Ten Hag’s team on loan.

Reguilon joined Tottenham from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020, and he has played 67 times for the North London club in all competitions.

Last season, the full-back was on loan at Atletico Madrid, where he appeared 12 times in all competitions.

The six-time Spain international, who has two years left on his contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, has yet to play for Spurs this season amid doubts about his future.

At this point, it is uncertain whether the loan will expire in January, with Shaw scheduled to be fully recovered by October.

Reguilon’s arrival may potentially allow Alvaro Fernandez to move on loan, with a number of clubs interested in Man United’s 20-year-old full-back.
