PSG forward Neymar to miss the rest the season due to injury

According to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Neymar will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to heal his ankle sprain. The 31-year-old has suffered from ankle ailments for a number of years now.

And his most recent injury occurred during Les Parisiens’ 4-3 victory over Lille last month. Neymar had to be carried off the field at Parc des Princes after getting injured.

While the initial prognosis said the former Barcelona player would be sidelined for three to four weeks. Neymar had already been ruled out of this week’s second leg clash against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

However, subsequent examinations have shown the need for surgical intervention. Neymar will undergo surgery in the coming days to address the cause of his ongoing ankle issues.

PSG said in a medical update on Monday night that Neymar will require three to four months to recover. Thus, the Brazilian international will thus not play any more matches this season.

When can Neymar return back in PSG training?

The idea of winning their first Champions League now looks a little far-fetched. In the best-case scenario, the PSG forward will resume training at the beginning of June.

“Neymar Jr has sustained a number of instances of instability in his right ankle in recent years. Following his latest sprain on 20 February, the Paris Saint-Germain medical staff recommended a ligament repair operation to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All the experts consulted have confirmed this necessity,”

the statement read.

“The surgery will be performed in the next few days at the ASPETAR hospital in Doha. It will take 3 to 4 months before he can return to training with the team.”

Neymar has played 106 games for the French champions since relocating to Paris from Barcelona in 2017, but he has struggled with his fitness throughout. In the summer of 2019, he missed three months of action due to an ankle ligament tear.

Although Neymar experienced subsequent ankle issues in December 2020 and November 2021, the Brazilian was at his best for Les Parisiens in the first part of the current season.

Neymar, who thrives in the feared front three alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, will finish the season with 18 goals and 17 assists from 29 games across all competitions.

Only Messi (12) has more assists in the top tier than the South American, who has 13 goals and 11 assists in 20 Ligue 1 games this season.

In 173 appearances for PSG in all competitions, Neymar has accumulated a total of 118 goals and 77 assists, yet his future is still in doubt due to worries about his lifestyle off the field.

Presnel Kimpembe of PSG is also sidelined for the remainder of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon, joining Neymar as a long-term injured player.

On the plus side, Achraf Hakimi and Renato Sanches will be able to go to Munich for Wednesday’s second leg despite the former just being charged with rape and the later recovering from a thigh injury.
