Rafael Nadal got emotional, tears rolled down his cheeks as he moved within one of Roger Federer’s record by defeating Daniil Medvedev and claimed his 19th Grand Slam championship.
Nadal was playing in his 27th major final but it was first for Medvedev. However, both the players fought in a classic encounter at Flushing Meadows. It was a five hours rollercoaster match that ended up with the 33-year-old’s win.
Seeing a highlight reel of his slam wins, which was played inside the stadium when he claimed match point —the Spanish star got overwhelmed and the tears rolled down his cheeks in a touching moment.
Nadal in a statement said, “It has to be one of the most emotional nights of my tennis career. This victory means a lot and especially with the way the match became so difficult, so tough … it has been a crazy match, no? I’m just emotional.”
