Ravindra Jadeja is out of the IPL for the rest of the season. On Wednesday, the India all-rounder was released from the Chennai Super Kings‘ bubble.
The all=rounder’s IPL season was cut short due to a rib injury and thus he missed CSK’s previous match as well. In fact, since being acquired by the Super Kings in 2012, Jadeja has only missed two games for CSK including the DC game this season.
Jadeja injured himself while trying a catch after racing in from deep against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Kasi Viswanathan, Super Kings’ chief executive officer, confirmed that both franchise and Jadeja agreed it was best for him to recover outside of the IPL.
Chennai Super Kings’ chief executive on Ravindra Jadeja
“He has a bruised rib,”
“The medical advice is he should not strain it, so we have decided that he should leave the IPL.”
“We have only two games left and given his heavy international commitments, we thought he should not risk further injury,”
Said Kasi Viswanathan, Super Kings’ chief executive officer.
The 33-year-old was assigned as CSK’s new captain as MS Dhoni decided to step down. Jadeja had never led a senior team full-time prior to being handed the Super Kings gig. However, the leadership role didn’t turn up quite well for the all-rounder as CSK faced a streak of defeats.
With the extra responsibilities of captaincy, his form deteriorated: the Indian all-rounder has 116 runs in ten innings this season, including two ducks, at an average of 19.33 and a strike rate of 118.36. Jadeja has five wickets from 33 overs at an average of nearly 50 with the ball. Jadeja, one of cricket’s top fielders, has also dropped four catches in this edition of IPL.
Thus, Jadeja was removed from the skipper’s role and the former captain MS Dhoni took back the responsibilities midway through the season.
Currently, Super Kings are currently ninth on the points table with eight points from 11 games. While Jadeja, one of cricket’s fittest players, is going through one of the most difficult periods of his career.
Looking at his current form and fitness, Jadeja’s selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup squad look doubtful now.
