Real Madrid have to improve on the field in a number of areas and one of them is left-back. Ferland Mendy is now sidelined due to injury, and there have also been concerns about his form for some time.
David Alaba has filled in for him there, but he hasn’t been in great shape since the World Cup break. Moreover, the former Bayern Munich player is currently sidelined with an injury.
At this time, Eduardo Camavinga appears to be their best option. While Real Madrid already has an agreement in place for Fran Garcia to return from Rayo Vallecano in the summer. In addition to it, the La Liga giants appear to be pursuing a second left-back who rose through Barcelona’s ranks as well.
When progressing through the Barcelona youth ranks, Alejandro Grimaldo was well-regarded. However, he never played for the Catalan giants at the senior level.
The 27-year-old eventually relocated to Benfica in 2016 and has since made a name for himself there. This time around, Grimaldo is having a stellar season at Benfica. And it appears that other teams in Europe have taken notice of that.
Real Madrid in need of a left-back
According to Mundo Deportivo, the midfielder would be open to a new project. However, Benfica intends to extend Grimaldo’s contract as he has become a key member of the squad.
The reports also suggest that Real Madrid are now interested in bringing the player to Bernabeu this summer.
Transfermarkt statistics show that in 41 appearances for Benfica this season in all competitions, Grimaldo has tallied 5 goals and 11 assists. Those are noteworthy figures for a left-back.
In addition, his current contract expires in the summer. For many clubs in Europe, signing a player in that kind of shape at the age of 27, as a free agent, would be a wise decision.
Grimaldo could, of course, elect to extend his contract and stay with Benfica. But it is any players’ dream to play for Real Madrid and thus, he could be persuaded to join the Spanish powerhouse.
We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for him, as well as whether Real Madrid decides to make a move for hime or not.
