Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) chairman Joe Lewis is said to have told CEO Daniel Levy that the club cannot afford to lose Harry Kane on a free transfer.
With the all-time leading scorer refusing to sign new terms, his contract is set to expire at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Despite interest from German giants Bayern Munich, numerous reports have stated that Levy is willing to play hardball over the forward’s future.
The Bundesliga winners are claimed to have failed with two bids for the England international, with a price in the area of €80 million (£68.98 million) not enough to entice Spurs to sell.
Bayern Munich are apparently considering a third bid for the 29-year-old, though it is unlikely to fulfil Levy’s criteria.
Nonetheless, Levy has been advised that Kane must be sold if he does not sign a new contract in the coming weeks, according to the Daily Mail.
The North London club are rumoured to be willing to offer Kane a deal worth £400,000 per week, with the iconic frontman also expected to be offered a backroom job at the end of his career.
However, Kane’s priority is to win club silverware as soon as possible, as the long-serving Spurs man has yet to win a trophy during his tenure.
Until today, it was assumed that Kane would spend the next year of his career spearheading the Spurs offence under newly appointed head coach Ange Postecoglou.
There has also been no indication that Kane would actively pursue a move to Bayern if Spurs decided to extend his contract for another year.
However, the situation for both Levy and Kane looks to have changed, with Lewis eager to avoid paying a large price for the team’s outstanding player when they will not be competing in Europe in 2023-24 and would face greater competition for continental spots during the ensuing season.
Bayern, which is still looking for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, will now likely try to strike an agreement with Levy in order to complete a deal, knowing that Spurs would also seek an alternative to Kane if he is moved.
According to the article, teams like Manchester United, who were heavily associated with Kane earlier this year, are unlikely to return to the bargaining table.
