Chelsea closing in on Marcelo Gallardo agreement

Marcelo Gallardo to Chelsea

Chelsea are apparently getting closer to naming Marcelo Gallardo as their new head coach, effective next season.

Since Graham Potter’s dismissal a little more than a week ago, the Blues have been prominently associated with a variety of possible prospects.

Former Spain coach Luis Enrique is rumoured to have gone to London for talks, while Julian Nagelsmann and Ruben Amorim are also being considered.

Chelsea has named Frank Lampard as caretaker manager until the conclusion of the season in order to complete a thorough recruitment procedure.

While the club veteran is vying for the full-time job, Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers over the weekend ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

Nonetheless, according to UOL, Chelsea are making headway in talks with former River Plate manager Gallardo.

After finishing a trophy-laden time with the Argentine team last year, the 47-year-old is currently looking for his next challenge.

Gallardo on his way to Chelsea?

Gallardo won 14 trophies with River Plate, including the Argentine Primeira Division in 2021, but he now wants to work in Europe.

His preference is to wait until the summer before embarking on a new project, which currently works perfectly with Chelsea thanks to their reunion with Lampard.

Furthermore, it is alleged that Enzo Fernandez, who formerly worked with Gallardo at Estadio Mas Monumental, has given his approval for Gallardo to transfer to Stamford Bridge.

The pair are claimed to have had a ‘father-son’ bond before Fernandez moved to Benfica in July, the midfielder having made 51 first-team appearances.

With Fernandez being Chelsea’s club-record signing, keeping the World Cup champion pleased may be desirable for the club’s owners if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Gallardo was linked with moves to Southampton and Leeds United earlier this season, but neither deal came to fruition.

Thus, it looks highly likely that Chelsea will eventually end up signing Gallardo ahead of the new season.
