Harry Kane has surpassed everyone to become the all-time highest goal scorer for Tottenham Hotspur. The Englishman scored 267th goal for the team during Sunday’s Premier League match against Manchester City.
The 1-0 victory against Fulham by Tottenham in January saw the England captain tie Jimmy Greaves for 266 goals but last weekend’s FA Cup match against Preston North End prevented him from breaking the record.
For the visit of Man City, though, Kane unexpectedly made his way back into the starting lineup. It took him just 15 minutes to break the tie and firmly establish his position at the top of the charts.
After another horrifying Man City error, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg pressured Rico Lewis and won the ball back for Spurs just outside the penalty area, setting up the 29-year-old for his record-breaking goal.
To give Tottenham the lead, Hojbjerg moved into the penalty area and pushed the ball to his right for Kane, who duly sidefooted the ball past Ederson and into the bottom corner.
The striker’s goal also marked his 200th in the Premier League. Thus, making him just the third player to do so after Alan Shearer (260) and Wayne Rooney (208).
Kane scored 200 goals in the elite division in just 304 games, Shearer did so in 306 games, while Rooney needed 462 games to reach the double century mark.
Harry Kane comments on scoring the winning goal for Tottenham
“It’s hard to put into words and I’m so glad it came in a win,”
Kane said.
The striker paid tribute to Greaves in an interview with Sky Sports News following the 1-0 victory, calling his late countryman a “total idol” and praising his record-breaking goal in front of the Tottenham supporters as a “big moment.”
“[Jimmy Greaves] is a complete hero, one of the best strikers to play the game so to be in that conversation is special. And to overtake him is a huge moment for me.”
After Kane’s goal, Tottenham held on to defeat Man City, who had now lost their previous five visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, under the guidance of assistant Cristian Stellini while Antonio Conte recovered from surgery.
Before the half, Riyad Mahrez’s attempt hit the crossbar, and Cristian Romero was dismissed for a second booking in the 87th, but a tenacious Spurs team earned every bit of their narrow victory.
“We worked so hard to keep a clean sheet. It was so special to do it in front of the fans. There has been so much talk about it in the last couple of weeks and to do it in such a big game is even more special,”
Kane added.
“It is a great feeling. When I started playing regularly it wasn’t even in my imagination to score 200 Premier League goals and I have a few more years left, so hopefully there are more to come.”
Tottenham will play their next match away to Leicester City on Saturday. They are now one point behind Newcastle United, who are in fourth place in the Premier League table.
