Manchester United preparing a new contract for David de Gea

According to a source, David de Gea and Manchester United are in the middle of contract talks. The 32-year-old is presently playing for the Red Devils in his 12th season, but his long-term future has been questioned because his contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

De Gea, who reportedly earns roughly £375,000 per week, is said to be Man United’s best-paid player, but the 20-time English top-flight winners are eager to lower his pay concerning the salary cap.

The Red Devils supposedly imposed a £200,000 salary ceiling on the team in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure. The Spanish goalkeeper is reportedly ready to accept a hefty wage reduction in order to stay at Old Trafford.

De Gea gave a positive update on contract negotiations with Man United last month and stated his intention to retire at the club. In an interview with Sky Sports News, De Gea discussed contract negotiations with the team.

“I’m very relaxed. I just focus on training, perform as best as I can. But, for sure, it’s going to end in a good way.”

“I hope (to stay for the rest of my career). I was saying this is my club, I’ve been here many, many years and it’s a huge honour to be here and I’m so happy here.”

Positive discussions over a new deal between De Gea and Man United are ‘ongoing,’ claims transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

Romano adds that United has not activated the 12-month contract extension for the goalie since they are working with him to reduce his salary. Both parties hope to finalise agreements “shortly,”.

The Italian journalist also asserts that Man United is ‘accelerating’ talks to extend Alejandro Garnacho’s contract as well as renewing the contracts of Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot.

In the summer of 2011, De Gea moved from Atletico Madrid to Man United for about £18.9 million, which at the time set a British record for a goalkeeper transfer fee.

Since then, the 45-cap Spain international has made 524 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions and has amassed eight major trophies, with Sunday’s EFL Cup victory being the most recent.

De Gea surpassed Peter Schmeichel to set a new club record for clean sheets after keeping 181 for Man United in the 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Wembley.

Both Illan Meslier of Leeds United and No. 1 goalkeeper David Raya of Brentford have reportedly been named as potential summer targets should the Red Devils and De Gea be unable to come to terms in the coming months.
