If Mauricio Pochettino is selected as Chelsea manager, he is believed to include Romelu Lukaku in his plans. The Argentine has been unemployed since quitting his role as manager of PSG at the end of the 2021-22 season.
However, after impressing the club’s hierarchy during the selection process, he is the frontrunner to become Chelsea’s new boss. According to a recent source, Chelsea could confirm Pochettino’s appointment later this week, with only ‘minor issues to iron out.
The 51-year-old will take over from interim manager Frank Lampard at the end of the season. Moreover, the Argentine will have a lot of work to do after a disappointing campaign.
Chelsea are now in the bottom half of the Premier League league and are suffering from a poor goal-scoring record this season. The Blues are currently the fifth-lowest scorers in the Premier League, having scored 31 goals in 33 league games.
They are anticipated to recruit a striker during the upcoming transfer window. But Pochettino may seek within to find a solution to their goal-scoring problems.
The Argentine is willing to give Lukaku a fresh start at Stamford Bridge when he returns from his loan term with Inter Milan.
Lukaku is rumoured to want to return to Inter on loan next season, but Pochettino may be able to persuade him to stay at Stamford Bridge.
According to the source, if Pochettino is appointed as Chelsea’s new manager, he will offer his vision to Lukaku and allow him time to decide whether he wants to be a part of his ambitions.
Lukaku joined Chelsea from Inter in the summer of 2021, but he struggled to regain his best form during his second stint in West London.
In a December 2021 interview with Italian television, Lukaku stated that he was struggling to succeed in Tuchel’s system.
Tuchel and Lukaku’s relationship did not repair following the interview, and the Belgian international returned to Inter on a season-long loan.
This season, Lukaku has made 28 competitive appearances for the Nerazzurri, scoring nine goals and providing five assists.
