Rajasthan Royals look to offer Jos Buttler multi-year contract

Jos Buttler to miss games for Rajasthan Royals IPL 2023

Rajasthan Royals, the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, are reportedly trying to offer England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler a multi-year contract in an attempt to lock him down.

Buttler, who plays for Paarl Royals in the SA20 league and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, is unquestionably a fan favourite.

The likely reason for this contract is Buttler’s ability to win games with the bat alone, which the club has already experienced during the Indian Premier League 2022 (IPL 2022).

According to a recent story in The Telegraph, the Rajasthan Royals are seriously contemplating offering Buttler the lucrative contract. However, only time will tell how the issue develops and whether or not Buttler accepts the contract if one is offered to him.

Furthermore, Buttler is not the only player who has apparently been given a contract like this. As previously reported by the Daily Mail, top English pacer Jofra Archer was reportedly in talks with the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians to clinch a similar contract.

Signing a franchise cricket contract, on the other hand, may imply giving up the national team contract. If a player signs a long-term deal with a cricket franchise, the national team’s board must obtain permission from the franchise to use the player for international duty.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is actively fighting to prevent players from signing multi-year contracts with teams. In an effort to keep the players, the ECB is reportedly offering multi-year contracts with enhanced match fees.

However, it may be difficult to prevent the players from accepting contracts with multiple franchises, as this allows them to extend their careers.

Given that the players will not be playing as many Test matches, focusing on white-ball cricket for yearly events may help them keep in shape and possibly provide them with more options in representing their individual countries during key ICC tournaments.
