According to reports, Barcelona have unexpectedly emerged as a contender to lure Cristiano Ronaldo away from Manchester United this summer. Last year, the 37-year-old was welcomed back to Old Trafford by the Red Devils for a second stint.
Manchester United have not been able to recover since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford. And, now, players have started losing faith in the Red Devils. As one of the former and current Man United star and living legend Cristiano Ronaldo has been in the news, which suggests he want to part ways with United.
He had a productive season on an individual level with 24 goals from 38 games across all competitions. Even though Ronaldo scored 18 goals in the Premier League, the 20-time English champions could only finish sixth and earn a spot in the Europa League.
Ronaldo is believed to have informed Man United that he wants to depart in the current transfer window. While despite the signing of Erik ten Hag, out of concern that he will not be able to achieve his goals of winning silverware at Old Trafford, Ronaldo wants to switch.
Man United have no intention of parting ways with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. While Mr. no. 7 still has another 12 months left on his contract with the option to extend until the end of the 2023-24 season. Possibility of Ronaldo joining Barcelona
It is believed that Chelsea will be first in line to get Ronaldo if he decides to leave Manchester United. Despite his affiliation with Real Madrid’s arch-rivals, Barcelona, Spanish publication AS reports that Barcelona is also interested in signing the Portuguese international. Before leaving for Juventus in 2018, Ronaldo played for Real Madrid for nine years, winning four Champions Leagues and tallying 450 goals in 438 matches.
According to the sources, Mendes has since visited Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, and the two discussed a stunning Ronaldo transfer to Camp Nou.
Despite Ronaldo’s unclear future in 2021, Barcelona president Laporta apparently intended to sign him to the team, but a deal fell through due to Barcelona’s persistent financial issues.
Due to personal obligations, Ronaldo was unable to report to Man United for preseason practise on Monday. Paris Saint-Germain and Sporting Lisbon have also been mentioned as potential suitors for the forward recently.
In light of Robert Lewandowski’s desire to leave and play for Barcelona, Bayern Munich was also rumoured to go for Ronaldo, but the Bundesliga champions are not believed to be interested in a deal for the Portuguese.
According to a different report from The Athletic, Ronaldo’s sale was proposed to the club’s CEO Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough in January. However, the two club executives declined to approve the sale.
If Ronaldo ultimately decides to stay at Manchester United, the striker reportedly thinks the team has to bring in at least six new players in the summer transfer window in order to contend for trophies.
Next week, Ten Hag’s team will begin their preseason trip in Thailand, and the club has reportedly notified Ronaldo that he must travel with the team.
