Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool and Jack Grealish of Manchester City have been ruled out of England’s September matches due to injury.
Unsurprisingly, the pair were called up to Gareth Southgate’s team for next Saturday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine, as well as their 150th Anniversary Heritage match against Scotland on September 12.
Grealish and Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, arrived at St George’s Park nursing injuries from their domestic commitments, with the former missing Man City’s 5-1 hammering of Fulham due to a quadriceps injury.
Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa in the 71st minute due to a hamstring injury, and he walked straight down the Anfield tunnel after leaving.
England have already announced that Grealish and Alexander-Arnold have been sent home to recover, and Southgate has no plans to call up replacements.
“Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been ruled out of England’s September fixtures. The pair reported to St. George’s Park on Monday but have since withdrawn from the Three Lions squad following checks on injuries sustained prior to camp,”
A statement read.
“All other players are due as planned apart from Kieran Trippier who will arrive on Wednesday owing to a personal commitment.
There are no further call ups planned as Gareth Southgate’s squad prepare for Saturday’s UEFA EURO 2024 against Ukraine in Wroclaw and Tuesday’s 150th Anniversary Heritage Match with Scotland in Glasgow.”
Furthermore, due to a personal engagement, Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier will be late to the camp, but the Three Lions are otherwise well-stocked for their return to play.
Following Alexander-Arnold’s substitution at the weekend, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp stated that the defender had tweaked his hamstring, but the player was optimistic that he had not suffered a catastrophic injury.
According to The Athletic, Alexander-Arnold will not be absent for long, but the 24-year-old will be out for the next two weeks after receiving tests on Monday.
As a result, Alexander-Arnold’s participation in Liverpool’s Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 16 is in doubt, but he should be available for the club’s Europa League start against Austrian side LASK Linz on September 21.
The right-back is already the second Liverpool player to withdraw from national team duty due to injury, following Ibrahima Konate’s withdrawal from France duty earlier on Monday.
Meanwhile, Grealish joins John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne in the Manchester City treatment room. City’s next game is against fellow quick starts West Ham United on September 16.
