IPL 2022: SRH kept their slip hopes for Playoff alive after defeating MI

IPL 2022: SRH beats MI by 3 runs

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ended their losing skid by defeating the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in a group stage match of IPL 2022 played at Mumbai’s legendary Wankhede Stadium on May 17 (Tuesday). The closeness of the match eventually resulted in Orange Army winning by just three runs.

The toss was won by MI captain Rohit Sharma, who chose to bowl first. While SRH batsmen Abhishek Sharma and Priyam Garg came out firing in response.

Sharma, on the other hand, left quickly. Garg was then assisted by Rahul Tripathi, a skilled batsman, in taking on the MI bowlers. Garg was dismissed just as the Orange Army was about to reach 100 runs.

Nicholas Pooran, the wicketkeeper-batsman, and Tripathi thrashed the MI bowlers all over the field. SRH concluded on 193/6 in their allowed 20 overs, allowing the Men in Blue and Gold to attempt a comeback late in the innings.

The successful bowlers for MI were Daniel Sams, Ramandeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Riley Meredith. MI openers Ishan Kishan and skipper Rohit Sharma gave MI a brilliant start by scoring 95 runs without losing a wicket while chasing 194 to win.

Thereafter, the Orange Army took control of the situation by taking wickets at regular intervals. Tim David gave it his all to help Mumbai win the game, but it was too much to ask of the batter, and MI lost by just three runs. Umran Malik of the Express was outstanding once again, taking three key wickets.

Yesterday’s game had no impact on the standing positions in the points table as SRH and MI remained at their 8th and 10th position respectively. At one hand MI are already out of the tournament while SRH have almost an impossible chance to qualify for the Playoffs.

After the match, the winning captain said Kane Williamson said

“Nice to break the streak. But also nice to win the wrestle. Had a few games where momentum wasn’t on our side and we couldn’t wrestle it back. All in all a very good performance and a lot of learning to come out of it.”

“Our death bowling has been a strength of ours and Bhuvi’s one of the top death bowlers of the tournament. His contribution today and to bowl a maiden is an amazing contribution and match winning moment really.”

Meanwhile, the losing captain Rohit Sharma said

“Till about the second last over I thought we had it. Unfortunate runout there of Tim David. We thought we were very much in the game till that runout. You would back yourself to get even 19 off the final over. Credit to Sunrisers, they held their nerve pretty well at the back end.”

“We will try everything we can from our side. If there is an opportunity to try out new guys we will definitely look to do that as well.”

What’s next for Mumbai and Hyderabad?

MI will play their last league stage game against Delhi Capitals (DC) on 21st May, Saturday. While SRH will play agaist Punjab Kings (PBKS) on the next day.
